Steven Elliston Kingborough’s Young Citizen of the Year
Kingborough Council hosted its annual awards ceremony on Saturday 5 January 2018 at the Civic Centre in Kingston to recognise and celebrate residents who have made an outstanding contribution to the well-being of the Kingborough community.
The Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Dean Winter presented the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year and Certificates of Appreciation. He said “These awards are Council’s opportunity to recognise not only those who are receiving awards, but to send a message to all volunteers, who, through their own efforts help create the community we are so proud of.”
Steven Elliston has been recognised as Kingborough’s Young Citizen of the Year for his outstanding commitment and inspirational enthusiasm as a volunteer, particularly in service to older members of our community. Although Steven lives with a disability, this has not deterred him from being a dedicated volunteer. His experience enables him to understand
and appreciate the needs of others, providing personalised assistance and inspirational motivation.

An enthusiastic volunteer, Steven has provided support and friendship to the residents and staff of Bishop Davies Court, a residential care facility in Kingston, over the past two and a half years. He is always willing to help any staff member and is always on hand to provide social support and comfort to residents. As well as his normal duties at the facility, Steven loves to spend time with residents – sharing uplifting stories or just sitting and listening to their experiences. He also helps to run activities and functions for the residents.
At the recent Christmas function, where Steven greeted everyone at the door and gave out Christmas gifts, residents and family were delighted to see Steven being awarded their Volunteer of the Year Award. The respect and admiration for his ability to befriend and care for residents is obvious and he is a highly valued member of the team. He is the only volunteer to have received their Star of the Year Award, which was presented to Steven in 2017.
A cricket lover, Steven also volunteers with the Kingborough Knights cricket club and has been a weekly assistant over the past two cricket seasons.
Steven lives in assisted community care and is an active member at Rowallan Park facility. He contributes to the community in many ways, but takes particular care of the hens and gardens. He is a popular figure in the wider Kingston community, making friends wherever he ventures.
Although Steven lives with a disability, this has not deterred him from being a dedicated volunteer. His experience enables him to understand and appreciate the needs of others, providing personalised assistance and inspirational motivation.
