Mission for Martina
At OneCare we are proud of our people – and Martina Odwogo is certainly no exception. Martina has worked with OneCare for over 5 years as an Extended Care Assistant (ECA) at Bishop Davies Court in Kingston….and she is a lady with a big heart and a big mission.
Her large family remains back home in Africa and in order to care for them, Martina works late into the night. She has two jobs, enabling her to regularly send money back home to her family in Africa.
Martina’s sister in Africa sadly passed away last July, leaving her young children to live with their cousin, who has sadly now recently passed away also. The children have gone to live with Martina’s brother, whose tent they lived in has been destroyed by bad weather.
Enter Jaren Conway, a fellow ECA at OneCare, who works alongside Martina at OneCare’s Kingston Facility, Bishop Davies Court. Starting a Go Fund Me account for Martina’s family in Africa, Jaren knew that simply by knowing Martina “people will genuinely want to help out if they can.”
The goal was to raise enough money for Martina’s family to be able to live with a secure roof over their heads.
“Sending items through the post is just too expensive so I thought this to be the best way to help this wonderful family. I know Martina would be so very appreciative and I myself just wanted to be able to help out in any way I can” Jaren says.
Bishop Davies Court Facility Manager, George Wilson is very proud of Martina and says “I like many in Australia cannot begin to imagine what it’s like to experience what Martina has to experience every moment of every day. I don’t think I’d be even a fraction as stoic as she is.”
Our people definitely are our greatest resource and we are so lucky to have Martina caring for others at OneCare.
Martina would personally like to thank everyone and says “from the bottom of my heart, thank you for raising this amount of money to help build a house for my nieces and nephews. Again thank you very much and may God bless you all”
So far half of the $1,800 goal has been raised and the building process has commenced for a new house in which Martina’s family can call home.
